It focuses on some of the key qualities of mentoring students, considers resiliency and the importance of identifying students’ strengths and contains numerous helpful tips to motivate teachers to promote the spirit of mentoring in their classrooms, on the sports fields and in other extra-curricular activities. In November 2005 80 Secondary School teachers attended this seminar. Feedback included: “I enjoyed looking at what made me resilient ie, where did my self-esteem come from.” “Great group work; ideas; getting people moving around; excellent.” “ … I’ve enjoyed it immensely at each stage – great flow – a real rollercoaster ride – I’ve looked at myself, my feelings, my emotions, my passion and what makes me and addressed some real challenges – thanks so much. Great structure to get through some very comprehensive intense material – fantastic Robin! A wonderful reminder of all that is great about our vocation. Continue to share your inspirational message – go forth!” “Well presented – good balance of anecdotes, personal input, activities and presentation (power point).” “I enjoyed the interactive activities – getting to know my workmates better; the mentoring stories. Great – good timing/quotes/stories/breaks/activities.” “I enjoyed the pep talk/feel good motivation you provided. You have great skills, Robin! Keep up the energy and passion because teachers need it. Thanks. I learned heaps and enjoyed it, feel motivated and enthused for a new intake of students next year.” “I enjoyed working and sharing with others. The story telling aspect from Robin and listening to his personal experiences with young people. He demonstrates a passion, knowledge and expertise for what he does and he supports this with personal humanistic examples.” “I enjoyed the seminar, in particular the practical tips and strategies I can put into place. Enjoyed the anecdotes. Thank you very much. You have thrown out the seed and I hope that individually and as a staff we will start to make a difference.” “Very well presented. Held my attention throughout. Exciting activities. It encouraged me to re-think my way of teaching.” “Enjoyed all – made me reflect on my experiences and methods of teaching.” “I enjoyed the opportunity to reflect on mentors in my own life; the variety of activities; the opportunity to move around. Very good – positive.” “Enjoyed the opportunity to share with others; stories of mentoring journeys; reminders to make connections with students. Good variety of listening/ getting up and being active. Great resources – appropriate and interesting.” “I enjoyed the variety of activities and your presentation style. You have a positive attitude towards mentoring and obviously have a passion for it. The course booklet was good. Thank you for an interesting seminar.” “I enjoyed thinking about my own mentors. How my teachers were with me. Am I like this? Looking at myself and my teaching. What I don’t do well and need to improve on. Good skills, good range of activities. Nice to be able to get up and walk around. Activities were a good length and gave opportunity for discussion amongst staff. Good eye openers. Thank you.” “I enjoyed the chance to reflect on my own situation and to share with others. Enjoyed quotes. Empathetic – read the audience well. Obviously genuine. I enjoyed revisiting the whole mentoring spirit. I am passionate about this role as a teacher.” In early 2006, 75 secondary school teachers attended a similar seminar. Comments included: "I enjoyed the activities and your own stories. Great content." "I enjoyed listening to examples of kids who have benefitted from mentoring. Well presented - authoritative, good material." "I enjoyed having the opportunity to share with my colleagues. Enabled me to know them on a different level. Well balanced - suited the audience." "I enjoyed the parts that signify to me why I came teaching and the re-iteration of the fact that content is not the most important thing. Very good. An excellent presenter. Enjoyed the interactive activities. As teachers we need to do that more, especially those who do not enjoy getting out of their comfort zone." "I enjoyed thinking back and acknowledging our own mentors of the past. Good mixture of activities. Key words: Teachability/servanthood." "I enjoyed it ALL. I loved it and am so glad the school is taking this on board and implementing it. Good short notes - bulleted. You did a marvellous job. I was riveted during the whole workshop. Awesome workshop." "I enjoyed the reflective worksheets and the sharing of experiences. Excellent transition from spoken presentation to workshop style activities. I really enjoyed every minute. Thanks." "I enjoyed the philosophy behind the presentation. Excellent timing after 8 weeks of giving teaching little/no thought." "I enjoyed the topic content and ease of language and examples; activities and structure of sharing. Very easy to listen to. Interesting examples. Non-threatening." "Sharing with others. Hearing basic elements of mentoring and associated stories. Very good. I liked the facilitator's passion and knowledge." | 16 Steps to Effective Youth Mentoring | Skills and Attributes of Generations Y and Z Teach | Teacher-Mentor Challenges | Mentoring Journey (Poem) | 10 Goal Setting Commandments | Teachers Song | The Invitation (Poem) | Book for Generation Y and Generation Z Teacher-Me | Practical Tips | 3 Hour Seminar | About YES! and the Founder | Setting up a Mentoring Program | Mentor | Generations Y and Z Teacher-Mentors | Peer Mentor | Great Links | Contact Us | |
