Expectations of a Generation Y Peer Mentor

  • A wise and trusted friend.
  • Focuses on the needs of the younger student.
  • Encourages a younger student to connect with the school, thus feeling safe and secure in the school environment.
  • Encourages a caring and supportive relationship.
  • Encourages a younger student to develop to her/his fullest potential.
  • Seeks to empower a younger student with key life skills.
  • Encourages and inspires younger students to develop their personal vision for the future.
  • Able to assist with the setting and achieving of specific, measurable, intentional, limited, extending and realistic (S.M.I.L.E.R.) goals, following a clear action plan (ensuring it's a fun process).
  • Able to assist with the development of an effective management of time schedule.
  • Assists younger students to improve their self-esteem, self-image, pride and confidence levels.
  • Encourages a younger student to identify with the local and wider community, appreciating the importance of being of service to others.
  • Is teachable - acknowledges that she/he does not know all the answers to life and is humble enough to accept advice and constructive feedback.
