 Program Design and Planning
-
Provide a brief background history as to how your organization has been established, the type of mentoring program you are running eg, one-to-one, group, peer mentoring, team, e-mentoring; school-based, community based and so on.
-
Briefly describe your client population, your mentor target group eg, +18, +21, university students, senior citizens and so on.
-
Mention some of the key outcomes you are hoping will be achieved through the effective running of your program.
-
Give an outline of key funders and who your key members are ie, Trust members or Advisory Board members, staff ie, the Organisational Structure.
-
Develop a brief Mission Statement which includes the name of your organization, what it does, who it serves and where its services are provided.
-
Develop a brief Vision Statement which outlines what your organisation wants to become as its mission is achieved.
-
In your program's Mission Statement consider including something to the effect that one of your primary concerns is the safety of all involved.
-
Have clear Policies and Procedures. Policies are core statements "that embrace the goals of your program and define what is acceptable to ensure program success, the safety of young people in your program, and effective and consistent program operations." (National Mentoring Center) Procedures are core statements which will "describe how a particular operational function is to be implemented and managed within your program(National Mentoring Center); brief steps, for example, outlining the processes to be followed to implement and support policies eg, how you will match mentors and students, details of the screening processes and who will be responsible for these actions.
-
Have a clear financial plan, which would include your budget and how you will need to start and sustain your program, as well as checks and balances to ensure a professionally managed and operated program.
